Formspree alternative: Ikiform vs Formspree
An honest comparison of Ikiform and Formspree: pricing, limits, spam protection, webhooks and file uploads, plus a field-by-field migration guide.
Formspree and Ikiform do the same core job: you keep your own HTML, point the form's action at an endpoint, and the service stores the submission and tells you about it. Formspree has been around longer and has a larger plugin catalogue. Ikiform is newer, narrower and built around signed webhooks and server-side validation.
The two differ most on price shape and on what sits behind a paywall. Formspree has a free plan and gates webhooks, Zapier and autoresponses behind its Professional tier. Ikiform has no free plan, but every tier, from the smallest, includes every feature, so the only thing that changes as you grow is the submission limit.
At a glance
| Feature | Ikiform | Formspree |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | None. Every plan is paid | 50 submissions a month, 30-day archive, no API or export |
| Paid plans | Pro from $6/mo for 500 submissions, up to $399/mo for 1,000,000. Every feature on every tier. Yearly is 10 months' price for 12 | Personal $15/mo (200), Professional $30/mo (2,000), Business $90/mo (20,000). Yearly is cheaper |
| Forms | Unlimited on every tier | Unlimited on every plan |
| File uploads | Not supported yet. A post with a file gets 422 files_not_supported | 1 GB on Personal up to 10 GB on Business, 25 MB per file. None on Free |
| Webhooks | 3 endpoints per workspace, signed with HMAC-SHA256, 9 attempts over about 3 d 6 h, with delivery logs | Webhook and Zapier plugins from the Professional plan |
| Built-in plugins | None. Connect tools through webhooks | Email, Slack, Discord, Telegram on Free; Sheets, Notion, Airtable and more on Personal; CRMs and Stripe on Professional |
| Spam protection | Honeypot (_gotcha), content scoring, per-form rate limits, allowed domains and an optional Cloudflare Turnstile check, with no keys needed | reCAPTCHA through Formshield and a _gotcha honeypot. Advanced spam controls on Professional, custom rules on Business |
| Autoresponses | No. Ikiform only emails you, not the person who filled in the form | Professional plan and up |
| Data location | Cloudflare, with the database in Asia-Pacific. EU Standard Contractual Clauses in the DPA | Infrastructure in the United States, per its privacy policy |
Where Formspree is the better choice
- You want to start for free. Formspree's free plan covers 50 submissions a month; Ikiform has no free plan.
- Your form takes file uploads. Formspree stores attachments on paid plans. Ikiform refuses posts that contain files.
- You want an autoresponse that emails the person who filled in the form. Formspree offers this from Professional; Ikiform doesn't send one.
- You want a ready-made plugin for a CRM, newsletter tool or Stripe instead of writing a small webhook handler.
- You want your data processed in the United States. Formspree runs on US infrastructure; Ikiform's database is in Asia-Pacific.
Where Ikiform is the better choice
- You need webhooks on a small budget. Ikiform's smallest tier includes signed webhooks with retries; on Formspree they start at Professional.
- You want to verify that a webhook really came from your form backend. Every Ikiform delivery is signed with HMAC-SHA256 and logged with its response.
- You want the server to reject bad data. Ikiform can enforce typed fields, required values and patterns, and returns field-level errors your form can show.
- You post from code as much as from HTML. Ikiform takes JSON, urlencoded and multipart on the same endpoint, and has a TypeScript SDK and a REST API on every tier.
- You want spam handled before it reaches your inbox without a visible puzzle: content scoring, rate limits and an optional Turnstile check run on every tier.
Who should pick which
Pick Formspree if you want a free start, file uploads, autoresponses or a no-code plugin for your CRM. It is the safer choice when the form is the whole integration and nobody on the team writes server code.
Pick Ikiform if submissions feed your own systems. Signed webhooks, server-side validation and an API come with the smallest tier, so a developer can wire the form into an app without paying for a higher plan first.
Migrating from Formspree
Formspree and Ikiform read the same kind of post, so most forms move by changing the action URL. Ikiform reads the same reserved names that Formspree forms commonly use, so the rest of the markup can stay as it is.
Field mapping
| Formspree | Ikiform | Notes |
|---|---|---|
action="https://formspree.io/f/..." | action="https://ikiform.com/f/frm_..." | Copy the endpoint from the form's overview in the dashboard. |
email field | email field | Notification emails use it as the reply-to address. Nothing to change. |
_replyto | _replyto | Supported, but names starting with _ are not stored as answers. Rename the input to email if you want the address saved with the submission. |
_subject | _subject | Same behaviour: the subject of the notification email, cut to 200 characters. |
_next | _next or _redirect | Both work, but only for https: URLs on the form's allowed domains. Or set Redirect after submit in the dashboard, which takes any URL. |
_gotcha | _gotcha | Same name and the same idea. A filled-in honeypot marks the post as spam. |
_cc | None | Add extra recipients in the form's notification settings instead, up to 10 per email. |
| File inputs | None | Ikiform doesn't take files yet. Upload them elsewhere and submit the link. |
@formspree/react useForm | submit from @ikiform/sdk | Or plain fetch with Accept: application/json. See the React guide. |
Before and after
<form action="https://formspree.io/f/xyzabcde" method="POST">
<label>
Email
<input type="email" name="email" required />
</label>
<label>
Message
<textarea name="message"></textarea>
</label>
<input type="hidden" name="_subject" value="New contact message" />
<input type="hidden" name="_next" value="https://example.com/thanks" />
<input type="text" name="_gotcha" style="display:none" />
<button type="submit">Send</button>
</form>Steps
- Create a form in Ikiform and copy its endpoint.
- Under Allowed domains, add every domain the form is served from, so
_redirectis followed and posts from other sites are treated as spam. - Swap the
actionURL and rename_nextto_redirect(or keep_next, both work). - Remove any file inputs, or replace them with a link field.
- If you used Formspree's Slack, Sheets or Zapier plugin, add an Ikiform webhook and follow the matching guide on the blog.
- Send a test submission and check it in the dashboard before you switch traffic.
What doesn't carry over
- Your Formspree submission history stays in Formspree. Export it there as CSV before you cancel.
- Autoresponses and file uploads have no Ikiform equivalent today.
FAQ
Is Ikiform cheaper than Formspree?
At low volume, no: Formspree has a free plan and Ikiform doesn't. Once you need webhooks, Ikiform's smallest tier includes them while Formspree's start at Professional. Compare the plan that has the features you actually use.
Does my existing _gotcha honeypot keep working?
Yes. _gotcha is Ikiform's default honeypot name, so the same hidden input works without changes.
Can I keep using _next for the thank-you page?
Yes, as long as the URL is https: and on one of the form's allowed domains. Otherwise Ikiform ignores it and shows its own thank-you page. A redirect set in the dashboard has no such limits.
What replaces Formspree's Slack or Google Sheets plugin?
An Ikiform webhook. The blog has step-by-step guides for Slack, Google Sheets, Discord, Notion and others, each with a small relay you can deploy.
