# Best form backends in 2026: an honest comparison

> Ten form backends and hosted form builders compared on free plans, prices, file uploads, webhooks and data location, including where Ikiform is the wrong choice.

Checked 2026-10-24 · https://ikiform.com/alternatives

There are two kinds of tool on this page. A form backend receives posts from a form you wrote yourself and handles everything after submit. A hosted builder also hosts the form, so you design it in their editor and embed it. Both are useful; they suit different teams.

We make Ikiform, a form backend, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to be fair: every competitor's numbers come from its own pricing page and docs, linked on its comparison page, and every Ikiform number comes from our docs. Where another product is the better choice, we say so.

## How to choose

### You want it free

For a contact form that ends in your inbox, [FormSubmit](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/formsubmit), [Web3Forms](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/web3forms) cost nothing. [Formspark](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/formspark) can cost the least at low volume because it sells one-time bundles. On Netlify hosting, [Netlify Forms](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/netlify-forms) is free on the credit-based plans. If a hosted form is fine, [Tally](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/tally), [Google Forms](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/google-forms) are free and capable.

### You need file uploads

[Basin](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/basin), [Formspree](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/formspree), [Getform (Forminit)](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/getform), [Netlify Forms](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/netlify-forms) store uploaded files. [Web3Forms](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/web3forms) emails attachments on paid plans, and [Formspark](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/formspark) stores links to files you upload to a provider such as Uploadcare. Ikiform doesn't accept files yet.

### Your data has to stay in the EU

[Formspark](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/formspark) stores data in Ireland and Germany and [Tally](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/tally) stores data in Europe. [Typeform](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/typeform) offers EU hosting on Enterprise. Ikiform's database is in Asia-Pacific, so it isn't the right pick here.

### Submissions feed your own app

Look for signed webhooks, retries and an API on the plan you can afford. Ikiform includes all three, plus server-side field validation, on its smallest tier. [Basin](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/basin) has signed webhooks from its Growth plan, and [Formspree](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/formspree) has webhooks from Professional.

### Non-developers build the forms

Pick a hosted builder. [Typeform](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/typeform) focuses on polished, one-question-at-a-time forms, [Tally](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/tally) has a generous free plan, and [Google Forms](https://ikiform.com/alternatives/google-forms) is the natural choice inside Google Workspace.

## Where Ikiform falls short

- No free plan. Pro starts at the price in the table above.
- No file uploads yet.
- No autoresponder: Ikiform emails you, not the person who filled in the form.
- No EU data storage. The database is in Asia-Pacific.
- No hosted form pages or visual builder. You bring the form.

## FAQ

### What is a form backend?

A service that receives a form post at a URL and does the server work for you: checking the data, filtering spam, storing it and sending it on by email or webhook. You keep writing the form itself in HTML or your framework.

### Is a hosted form builder a form backend?

Not quite. Typeform, Tally and Google Forms also host the form itself, so you design it in their editor and embed or link to it. They suit teams where non-developers build forms. A backend suits forms that live in your own code.

### Which form backend is free?

FormSubmit is free outright. Web3Forms (250 a month), Formspree (50 a month), Basin (50 a month) and Forminit (100 a month) have free plans, Formspark gives 250 submissions once, and Netlify Forms is free on Netlify's credit-based plans. Ikiform has no free plan.

### Why does a page written by Ikiform recommend other products?

Because a comparison that always picks the author is useless. Ikiform is a good fit for forms that feed your own systems. It is a poor fit if you need it free, need file uploads, or need data stored in the EU, and each comparison says so.
